DVD players to outsell Blu-ray players this year |
Posted by: Scott • Forum: Home Theater News

The sad state of Blu-ray: Despite much hype and (finally) shrinking price tags, last decade's technology is still winning. NYT: The Consumer Electronics Association predicts that North American consumers will spend $1.3 billion on Blu-ray players in 2009, outpacing the projected $1.2 billion that will be spent on regular DVD players, although Blu-ray players are two to three times more expensive. That means that DVD players -- which many of us have spares of, collecting dust in closets -- will still significantly outsell Blu-ray players...

Updated the firnware on my Samsung BD-UP5000 and it didn't like it |

Yeah, so it pretty much won't play most Blu-ray movies. HD DVD and SD are fine though. I was thinking it may be a problem with BD-Live, since most of the titles that won't play use it. What few titles that do work don't have BD-Live features, except for 'Superman: The Movie'. I get a disc read error, while the other movies just hang and never load. So maybe there is something else going on with that particular disc. This model doesn't support BD-Live so I'm not sure why it would be a problem. That's the only thing I can figure. I know that...

Morons giving tech and buying advice on Blu-ray |
Posted by: Scott • Forum: Blu-ray Hardware & Software

My grandmother clipped an article out of the newspaper and gave it to me last night. She thought it might have useful information I would need to know, seeing as how I'm so into home theater and HD. For the most part it has basic information that I already knew and just seemed like a little fluff piece written by a novice who is writing for a group of novices. No big deal, right? But then I had to stop reading when I got here: Quote: One thing I didn't like is that all of the Blu-ray movies I watched were widescreen, so there were black bars above...

LG LH95 is the “world’s slimmest” LED HDTV |
Posted by: Scott • Forum: HDTVs

LG has pulled the wraps off what it claims to be the world’s thinnest LED backlit high definition television. The LH95 is apparently a mere 24.8mm in depth, but manages to deliver a staggering 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. We tend to take contrast ratio claims with a pinch (nay, a fistful) of salt, but that figure matches the claims of Philips’ LED Lux television, the TV we recently spent a few days with and found to have the best black levels we’ve ever seen on an LCD screen. If LG can match that performance in a wafer-thin body, they’re...

Converter-box program running out of money |
Posted by: Scott • Forum: Home Theater News
Sat Jan 03, 2009 9:22 am
The Feb. 17 transition from analog to digital television broadcasts looms and as many as 8 million households are still unprepared, but the government program that subsidizes crucial TV converter boxes is about to run out of money. People who still rely on analog TV sets to pick up over-the-air signals — whether it is through rabbit-ear aerials on TVs or antennas on the roof — will see their screens go dark when the changeover happens. To avoid that, those people have to switch to cable or satellite TV, buy a television set with a digital...
